Sunday 10th October 2021 marks the 19th year that World Mental Health Day has been observed. In its earlier days its aims were general ones of promoting mental health advocacy and educating the public on relevant issues. The theme of this year’s World Mental Health Day is a powerful one to say the least – Mental Health in an Unequal World.
So, what does that mean? Well, mental health disorders are not prejudicial, it doesn’t matter your age, income, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or geographical location; just like a physical illness, mental illnesses can affect anyone. So why is there such disparity in access to mental health services across the world?
Research has shown the stigma and discrimination experienced by people who experience mental ill health not only affects that person’s physical and mental health, stigma also affects their educational opportunities, current and future earning and job prospects, and also affects their families and loved ones.
Talk Works is proud to work with organisations who put their employees’ mental health and well-being at the forefront of what they do. No matter job role, age, gender, ethnicity – help is accessible to all their employees. We are immensely proud to have worked with employers to support over 3000 individuals to re-establish a position of wellbeing, return to work and recover following an episode of mental ill health.
Our Belief – that we can help people to understand themselves better and to live better
Our Approach – to use psychological knowledge to work together to build resilient people and teams
Our Values – to work with organisations that share our mindset: understanding and caring for people is at the heart of good organisations
There is no denying that the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated mental health illness not only across the UK but across the entire world with the percentage of adults with depressive symptoms jumping from 10% in July 2019 to 21% in March 2021 according to the Office for National Statistics. It’s been known for some time that the average employee loses 11 days of productivity per year due to poor sleep (Kessler et al., 2011)… so there has never been a greater need to support your employees.
